“I looked for someone among them who would build up the wall and stand before me in the gap on behalf of the land so I would not have to destroy it, but I found no one.”

The Prophet Ezekiel reports on this astounding Old Testament exchange with God, telling him that he had searched far and wide among his people for a righteous man to “stand in the gap” and defend the land of the Israelites.

I have been involved with Bluffton Community Kitchen for about two years now. What amazes me is the impact the Kitchen has had on our community. I learned that our Founder, Ms. Ida Martin started out by helping her neighbors from the trunk of her car and her back door, providing about 500 meals in that first year. Over the past 15 years, the Kitchen has grown, and we now serve 850 meals per week.
One person, Ms. Ida, turned an idea into action that now impacts our entire county. “Standing in the Gap” is exactly what she did, and I believe that she was inspired to do this. As the idea inspired others, they too began to “Stand in the Gap” with her. Today we have nearly 60 dedicated volunteers, an enthusiastic staff, over 15 community partner organizations and over 160 engaged and generous donors.
So, today in 2025, how can you “Stand in the Gap” with Ms. Ida and the wonderful community she planted? Four ways come to mind.
1. Contact Candyce Valmont, our Program Director – ask about volunteering for our food programs. I guarantee you will be blessed!
2. Tell your friends and neighbors about our mission and programs.
3. Help us by collecting food and supplies in your neighborhood. See the list here.
4. Make a one-time or recurring monetary donation here.

No matter how you choose to “Stand in The Gap” with Ms. Ida and BCK you will be blessed!
